An Arsenal at the Ready
The purpose of the gospel portions book is to help the blood bought children of God draw near to the gospel fire by which they may warm their souls. The gospel saved us. The gospel also sustains us. We are weak pilgrims and we are prone to let the care of this world chase a rejoicing in the gospel right out of our hearts. The precious truths of the gospel fortify our souls against our enemies. As our souls are kept warm by the gospel fire, we are unable to root out the dread of our conscience, the condemnings of our hearts, and the deceptions of the world and the devil. We need an arsenal of gospel portions at the ready to which we can turn our hearts. This humble work exists because years ago, I realized my need for such an arsenal. My heart was too easily led away from the foundation of the gospel, and I struggled to find my way back to firm footing. So, every time I came across a gospel portion in my reading, I added it to the growing collection. It has been such a help to my soul. And now, my hope is that this book will be a help to yours as well. Drink deeply from this well of grace and mercy. Put your faith in the groaning Savior upon the tree and your hope in the living intercessor at the right hand of God. Wield the contents of this volume in favor of your soul. Think of this book as the leather pouch from which David drew his slinging stones. When you are confronted with an accusation of the devil, meet it with the smooth stone of the gospel. Think of this book as the banks of the river Jordan to which Naaman fled for healing of leprosy. When your heart is infected with self righteousness, submerge it in the living waters of the grace of God in Christ. Think of this book as the window where Rahab's scarlet thread was bound. When chaos rages around you, cast your gaze upon the promised redemption at hand. Think of this book as the bowl from which the Israelites ate the gathered manna that fell from heaven. When your soul is famished, partake of this free bread of life. Think of this book as the ten that contained the balm from Gilead. When your conscience reminds you of your many offenses, apply the soothing ointment of mercy. Think of this book as the ground where the lily grows among the thorns. When the world traps you and threatens to lure you away, let the fragrance of the glorious gospel woo your heart toward heaven. Gospel portions is available for preorder now from free grace press.
